My journey to Motherhood

Saturday, June 3, 2017

I had intentions of posting this on Mother's day, but wasn't quite ready to share my story. The process of trying to get pregnant is a very private thing, and can be quite lonely when no one else really understands what you are going through. Discussing a topic like this openly is difficult and I have debated whether I wanted to post this, but I think it's important for others to realize they are not alone, no matter their circumstance.

If you have been following my blog for any length of time, you may have read previous posts [here, here & here] about my desire to have a baby. Last time I posted about accepting that I may not be able to have biological children, and I was overwhelmed by the love and response from others who are in similar situations. Sharing my story has connected me to people that I otherwise wouldn't have known, and hearing their stories gave me hope for whatever the future held.

This is my journey to motherhood ...

My husband and I both wanted to have a baby after about 2 years of being married, but we both agreed that we wanted to be more established and feel financially ready to raise a child. Meanwhile, we were feeling a lot of pressure from the "outside world" to start a family which was really hard because it's not that we didn't want kids, we just weren't ready.

Another year went by and we had moved out of our apartment and into a house. I was so excited for this move because I thought that since we had the space and I was off of birth control, a baby was sure to follow. A few days before our 3 year wedding anniversary I had minor day surgery (on my lady parts), and that meant I needed some time to heal. So we waited some more, but not by choice. I was feeling like our time would never come, and it was really starting to affect me mentally and emotionally, so I took up running and decided to just focus on myself and getting healthy. So we took the "let's just let it happen" approach.

We decided that since it wasn't "just happening", we would really focus on trying to get pregnant. Man is that ever stressful! It became all about schedules and tracking numbers, and then that awful 2 week waiting period until I could take a pregnancy test. After 6 months of stress about not getting pregnant, I got the shingles virus. Weeks of sickness followed, which turned into months, and eventually it was 6 months before I started to feel better. During that time of countless blood tests and Dr.'s visits, I found out I had a thyroid disease (the thyroid produces and regulates all of your hormones), which was likely affecting my ability to get pregnant. I started seeing an Endocrinologist as well as a Naturopath, and I was finally able to start medication and be proactive about getting my health back on track.

This was taken after my first venture outside after weeks of sickness at home.

During those couple of years of desperately wanting a baby, I was angry with God. I didn't understand why He would put this desire in my heart if I couldn't have children. I felt embarrassed, angry, sad, and lonely. I was bitter toward others who were having their 2nd, 3rd, 4th child and here we were, with none.
But then I realized that maybe He had another plan for us, and I needed to be open to that. So I began to change my prayers, and ask God how He wanted make us parents.

In January my husband and I started talking about adoption or foster care as an option. We have always known that we wanted to welcome a child(ren) into our family that needed to be loved, but didn't know if the timing was right. In June when I wrote about being at peace with whatever happened, I had truly accepted the fact that I may never have a biological child, and I was learning to be ok with it. I reconciled with God and was looking forward to whatever He had in store for us. June 26, 2016, I found out I was pregnant!

The thing that has amazed me in all of this hardship, is how God's plan, not our own, really came together. When we started sharing the news that we were pregnant, it was a very emotional time for me. So many people said that they had read my blog post and had been praying for us and for our future baby. Wow! It made me realize more and more that this was not by our own doing, but truly a miracle from God.

Everyone's situation is different, and though the timing is sometimes hard to understand or accept, God has a plan much better than our own. Looking back now, I can see that.

If you are struggling to get pregnant or are going through something in your life that is preventing you from having children, there are tons of resources out there to support you. I am no expert, but if you do need a listening ear I am always here to listen.

New Mommy must-haves

Monday, May 1, 2017

If you read my Baby Registry post, you'll see some of the same items, however, there are definitely things that I have tried and don't like as much as I thought I would.

1. Electric Breast Pump
The day my milk came in was horrible. It happened overnight, so I woke up at 5am to engorged breasts and my baby was unable to latch. She was hungry and upset, and I sat in bed with a manual pump for 30 minutes in order to pump a bottle for her and get relief for myself. The next day we bought the Medela pump in style breast pump which has been one of the best investments we have made.

2. Lanolin Nipple cream
I was recommended the Lansinoh Lanolin nipple cream from many mom's and found it really did help in those first few weeks as my body adjusted to breast feeding every couple of hours. It doesn't change the fact that it feels like your nipple's are being murdered while baby feeds, but it does protect them from severe cracks.

3. Disposable nursing pads
I tried these organic washable breast pads, but found that they would stick to my skin and was painful to peel off of my already tender breasts, and they also didn't have any shape. I now use the Lansinoh disposable nursing pads, which I like the best out of any I've tried. They are thin and lightweight, but absorb very well and keep your skin dry no matter how full they get!

4. Nursing tank
I spent the first few weeks at home in this Medela nursing tank. It's super soft, breathable and wireless, so can be worn day to night. It also has tummy slimming stretch which helps you feel more comfortable when you still have that post-partum belly to dress.

5. Slip on shoes
This one might sound strange, but in my last month of pregnancy, bending over to tie my shoes became a struggle! I know some women also experience swelling in those last weeks as well, so a comfy pair of shoes is great. I bought a similar pair to this, and have been thankful to have them in this first month as well during my recovery period.

What were your must-have's in your first month post-partum?

A Birth Story: Maya Hope

Monday, April 17, 2017

I have always enjoyed reading birth stories and dreamed of the day when I could have this incredible experience for myself. While it is the most pain I have ever experienced in my life, it was also the most amazing feeling, knowing that my body was made for this.

..........................................................................*.......................................................................

Monday, March 6 was my due date, and it came and went with no signs of labour. I went through the week thinking each day could be, “the day”, with several Dr.’s appointments and still no progress beyond 1cm dilated and a softened cervix. I was scheduled to be induced on Tuesday, March 14 if nothing happened over the weekend.

Friday, March 10 my husband and I had a day date knowing that it may be one of the last days we had left just the two of us. I felt good, and enjoyed being out indulging in delicious food and spending time together.

Saturday, March 11 was my 30th birthday and it started at 5am with the first twinge of real contractions. I had been having consistent Braxton-Hick contractions through the week, so I could tell that this was different. I spent the day in some discomfort but it was brief and manageable. We had plans to spend the evening with my family to celebrate my birthday, so we continued as usual. While we were out the contractions were intensifying! I would try and bear the pain silently, but my mom (having her maternal instincts) could tell that I was struggling to stay comfortable. We cut the night short, and almost immediately after getting home, around 9pm, I had the first really strong contraction. They continued to be consistent every hour through the night, then every 45 minutes by early morning. I had the urge to pee after every contraction, so was able to notice the passing of the mucus plug, and thought that surely my water would break shortly after (which it did not).

Sunday (March 12) was such a hard day, as the contractions were getting longer and more intense, but were still only every 30 minutes. The only way I could get through a contraction was to be hunched over, either standing or on my knees. I would try to rest in between contractions, but then would have to get “into position” as I felt the next surge of pain come over me. At one point I was on the floor on my hands and knees in such agony, and I just cried after the contraction was over, not knowing how I could get through the next one. My husband was slightly panicked, wondering if we should go to the hospital or how he could help relieve the pain.

By 6:00pm the contractions were 15-12 minutes apart, and I was beginning to feel like it was going to take days for them to get any closer together. I knew that I was supposed to wait to go to the hospital until they were 5 minutes apart, but by 7:30pm they were 10 minutes apart and I didn’t know how much longer I could labour at home. We decided to go to the hospital, bags and carseat in tow just in case I was far enough along that we could stay.
Once we got to the hospital, I was put into a triage room so they could check my progress and monitor my contractions. I was only 2cm dilated! and the contractions were still every 10 minutes. We were told to try and wait until the contractions were closer together, but if they were too painful to manage at home, or my water broke, then we were to come back.

Around 12:30pm the contractions were starting to hit their peak and were lasting over a minute each. I wanted to try and wait as long as possible to go back to the hospital to be sure I would be admitted and not sent home again. The contractions weren’t getting any closer than 6-7 minutes apart, but were unbearable! I called the hospital and they said to come in and I’d have to get checked again to see if I could stay.

The drive there was agonizing! As I said before, the only way I could get through a contraction was if I was hunched over somehow, so sitting upright in a car was horrible! Thankfully it was 4:30am so there was no traffic and it only took us 17 minutes to get to the hospital. Apparently the main doors to the labour & delivery unit are locked during the night and early hours, so we had to park at the Emergency department and literally go through the entire hospital to get there. The nurse in the ER could tell I wouldn’t be able to walk there so she gave us a wheel chair that I could be wheeled in (thank goodness!). By the time we got to the L&D unit, my contractions were 5 minutes apart, and I was in obvious pain, so they admitted me without an exam and I was put directly into a birthing room.

It’s funny how you have things planned in your mind ahead of time as to how things will go, but until the time comes, you really never know what will happen. During my pregnancy and while planning my ideal birthing scenario, I had imagined that I would be laboring at the hospital for quite some time. I wanted to use hydrotherapy as long as possible and nitrous oxide gas when the pain got worse. I wasn’t sure if I wanted an epidural or not, but would make that decision when the time came. That was the plan…

So the real life version is that once I was admitted, I was 5cm dilated, hadn’t slept for two days, and was in an unbearable amount of pain during the contractions. The nurses advised me that I needed to get some rest before the delivery, and that the anesthesiologist was next door finishing an epidural and then would be leaving the ward. Basically it was now, or possibly have to wait hours until the next Dr. came on shift. My husband (knowing how long I had already been enduring the pain) encouraged me to get it while I had the opportunity. Soon after, I was being prepped, and the Dr. came in for the procedure. I sat there, legs hanging over the side of the bed, slumped shoulders as directed, and still in the middle of contractions. I had always heard that the needle was giant and it hurt like a b*tch, so I braced myself for what was to come. Turns out, the freezing was the worst part, as they have to freeze quite a large area on your back before the epidural. So after several pokes and contractions later, it was done.
I started to feel some relief almost immediately, though the medication was working much faster on the right side than the left, so I was still feeling twinges of pain on the left. They rolled me onto my side to even out the distribution, and for the first time in two days, I felt my body relax. I was both physically and mentally exhausted, and in that moment I knew it was the right decision.

For the next several hours, I tried to sleep, but my mind wouldn’t turn off. I kept thinking about what was ahead of us – the delivery. Thankfully my body got the rest it needed though, and by 10:30am I was fully dilated. The nurses dialed down the epidural medication and I slowly started to feel sensation coming back into my lower body. It was enough to have some control back and feel the “tightness” of a contraction, but thankfully I was not in any pain.

Just before 12:00pm the nurse had me do some practice pushes to see how much muscle control I had and how far the baby’s head was. Baby was ready and she said she could already see a full head of hair! They got me prepped, and our full medical team arrived and was ready to help deliver our baby. We had two residents, my nurse, a pediatric nurse, and the OB. My husband wanted to be a passive observer and provide emotional support for me during the delivery process, but our veteran Dr. wanted him to be fully involved in the process! Once I felt the next contraction coming on, he told my husband to grab my leg, and it was time to push! After the first push, her head was already crowning, and he told my husband to look down at our baby. I looked up at him with tears filling his eyes, it was a moment I’ll never forget. I pushed for about 35 minutes, thankfully without any complications or interventions, and at 12:25pm, our baby girl was born.

Maya Hope
7 lbs. 6 oz., 55cm long

Immediately after she was born, I was able to do skin-to-skin, and I couldn’t believe I was holding my baby. The moment we had been waiting for was finally here. My husband started talking to her and it was incredible to see her looking for him, after all those months, she recognized his voice. I was so proud of him also for cutting the umbilical cord – something he really wasn’t so sure he wanted to do.

I did have some hemorrhaging following the birth, but thankfully nothing too serious. It was, however, the most unexpected part of the delivery process for me, and it was a bit scary for both my husband and I. To help manage the bleeding, the nurses and Dr. provided uterine massaging along with several different medications. The massaging was extremely painful, especially since I was still experiencing some contractions as well, and the epidural medication was very low at this time. I am so thankful for the calm and competent medical team we had that got the bleeding under control quickly and took such good care of me. Next was delivering the placenta, which was fairly painless and quick. The Dr. said it was very large and extremely healthy! It was amazing to see the organ that was keeping my baby alive for those 9+ months, and to see an actual piece of evidence from the work I put into eating well and efforts to make sure my baby was healthy.

I had read all the books and prepared as much as I could, but nothing can ever really prepare you for a life changing experience like this.
Thanks for reading.

Baby Registry: What do you really need?

Wednesday, March 1, 2017

*I interrupt this month of Fashion, to bring you some real life advice - What you really need for your baby registery.

Registering for baby products can be overwhelming! So I asked some friends, who are new mothers, to share some of their favourite items from their registry to help you out (and me).

Breast Pumps
Medela pump in style breast pump $374.99
I registered for this product and have continued to hear good things about it.

AVENT manual breast pump $59.99
"All the parts are really easily removable which makes it super easy to wash. It's the only thing I'm used to and don't have an electric one to compare it to. I figured I would start with a manual pump and then if I really enjoyed pumping or felt like I needed something more efficient, I would get an electric one."
- Kate, first time mom

1 Medela Washable Breast pads |  2 Medela Lanolin Nipple cream |  3 OVer cover |  4 Nursing Pillow

Nursing Gear
Nipple Cream: "This is something that really helped me in the first week!"

"I love my OVer cover because it makes nursing quick and easy when we are out. And, because it's 360 coverage, I never really worry about nursing in public."
- Kate, first time mom

A nursing pillow that can double for tummy time and help support baby as they learn to sit on their own. I purchased this one for under $20 (on sale) from Babies 'R Us.

Stroller & Carseat
Uppababy stroller & carseat
"My Uppababy vista stroller is a lifesaver and I'm in love with the uppababy mesa car seat."
- Michelle, first time mom

Bottles & Accessories
I was told not to buy too many of the same type of bottle because sometimes your baby won't like the flow or specific type of nipple, so you'll have to experiment to see what works for your baby.

Dr. Brown's bottles can be purchased in a variety of sizes, glass or plastic, and options for nipple sizes for each stage. A formula dispenser is great for on-the-go bottle feeding! Compartments hold the perfect amount of formula, so you can have baby's milk perfectly prepared wherever you are.
I was talking with a new mom at my last Dr. appointment, and she suggested getting a microwaveable sterilizer rather than electric, for it's convenience. Water tends to calcify over time in an electric version, and also takes longer.

"We purchased this product when our twins were about 1 month old - after a month of mixing formula to supplement along with the breastmilk. The baby breeza is essentially a Keurig for formula. It mixes a perfectly warmed bottle in 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 oz. increments depending what you babe needs. If your a mom of multiples (because 20+ bottles a day is ALOT), or strictly use formula, it is definitely worth the price tag! The only con we have found was if formula builds up around the dispenser it will make a more diluted bottle, but with regular cleaning you won't have this issue."
- Kristen, first time mom to twins
Kiinde bottle warmer
"I definitely recommend registering for a bottle warmer, even if you only plan on using bottles occasionally, because most can be used to warm baby food as well. My favourite is the Kiinde Kozii bottle warmer. Although it's at a higher price point, it has a lot of great features, including; a timer, auto shut-off, a long lasting reservoir and a universal warming chamber.

My least favourite is the Tommee Tippee bottle warmer. While is warms bottles very fast, without the auto shut-off or timer, it has lead to several over heated bottles and two screaming babies! I also found I had to refill the water reservoir more often then my Kiinde Kozii. I would recommend spending the extra money for a higher quality product - it's worth it."
- Kristen, first time mom to twins

Diapering
Kirkland diapers seem to be the top of every budget conscious parent's list. Looks like I'll have a monthly date with Costco!

Aleva natural bamboo wipes
"They are thick and really easy to pull out of the small packages."
*Money wasters: wipe warmers

Noise Machines
You may be thinking do I really need one? Yes, you do. They help soothe your baby to sleep and establish a bed time routine, which will be the biggest thing on your mind in the few months after baby arrives.

"My favourite is the Munchkin Nursery Projector & Sound System. It not only provides soothing sounds and songs to your babe, but has a projector that displays a variety of rotating colourful images. Features like a nightlight (bright enough for night time changes) and a sensor that turns the machine on when baby cries, set this product above the rest."

"We found that our baby really likes white noise. We had used the fan on our microwave for a while until we found a noise machine we liked. We use the Skip Hop Owl Moonlight and Melodies Nightlight."

Pregnancy: the good, the bad, and things no one tells you

Thursday, January 5, 2017

There are many books, websites and blogs that you can read to help you prepare for pregnancy, but nothing can really prepare you for what your body is about to go through.

Here is my experience of the good, the bad, and the ugly side of pregnancy;

The Good

Getting pregnant is a huge blessing and one that we were praying about for a long time. I am so thankful that I have been given the opportunity to carry a baby.

Besides our engagement/wedding, I have never experienced so much genuine love and excitement from our family and friends, and even people that I don't know well.

My skin hasn't been this clear and soft for over a year, so I have been enjoying wearing minimal makeup these days. Just enough to cover up the dark circles under my eyes!

The Bad

The unwelcomed commentary.
People suddenly feel like it is appropriate to comment on everything, whether it's my weight, the size of my belly or even how tired I look.

Aching muscles and bones that make me feel like an old lady. Before I knew that I was pregnant, I was having very sore calve muscles (which I do usually get when I am overly tired). I wore compression socks to bed, which did help, but it's definitely not something I expected throughout my pregnancy.

The things no one tells you

You've probably heard that your hair will get thicker and shinier, but you will find that hair will start sprouting all over your body! I remember admiring my growing belly one day and noticed that my belly had some excess peach fuzz growing and I've noticed more facial hair as well - thankfully I am a blonde.

Body fluids will be out of control due to higher amounts of estrogen and increase in blood flow in your body. Runny nose, excess discharge, and a lot more sweating.

You will struggle with accepting your ever-changing body.
I have been trying to remember that the end is in sight, but already at 31 weeks, I am ready to get this baby out ASAP. The weight gain has been something that I am secretly hating, and I wasn't prepared for the huge transformation that my body was about to go through. I have been generally the same weight throughout my adult years, and have always been an active person. I have not had the energy or desire to exercise for the latter part of my pregnancy, which I know hasn't helped with my self-esteem. Let's just say I will be happy once my sweet babe is in my arms instead of my belly and we can go for walks together and I can start to feel like myself again.

Pregnancy Update: 28 weeks

Tuesday, December 20, 2016

Last week was a bit of a stressful one which ended with a visit to the hospital, so I wasn't really up for posting. So, I'm trying to catch up and post last week's update still so that I can keep track of my weekly progress.

How far along: 28 weeks
Size of baby: Eggplant
Weight gain: 21.4 lbs

What am I wearing: Maternity clothes?
I purchased another pair of pants (duplicate of one I already own, but in black), so am now pretty much set with my maternity wardrobe for the next 2.5 months. With it being Christmas time, I was needing something a little more dressy than the basics that I have been wearing, so I found this dress/top at Forever21 that I can wearing comfortably. I find wearing belts super uncomfortable and add unnecessary strain around my ribs, but I wanted to add a little more shape and colour to this outfit.

How do I feel: Symptoms?
I was having some odd intermittent bleeding last week, and my OB was not available, so I went to Labour & Delivery at the hospital I will be delivering at, and they took me right away. They monitored me and did an exam, and everything is good with the baby. Just have to go for some follow-up tests, but it was such a relief knowing everything is ok with my pregnancy.

Movement: She's moving like crazy! It's not only kicks that I feel these days, but because baby is getting bigger, I can feel her move from one side to another. Or if she's laying more on one side, my belly is very hard and I can feel little feet or shoulders poking me.

Sleep: I tend to wake up around 4:30am some mornings and am unable to sleep for about an hour. But I have been sleeping pretty well for the most part.

Blouse (dress) w/ belt: Forever21 | Pants (H&M maternity)

Pregnancy update: 27 weeks

Wednesday, December 7, 2016

I know I skipped week 26, but I felt awful last week because of this never ending cold and really wasn't up for taking pictures. Things have been pretty steady in the last couple of weeks, so not much to update you on in terms of pregnancy changes. I am in my last week of the second trimester, and offically 6 months pregnant. I can't believe only 3 months to go until we get to meet this little babe!

How far along: 27 weeks
Size of baby: Head of lettuce
Weight gain: 20.2 lbs

What am I wearing: Maternity clothes?
My bank account has suffered in the last couple of weeks as my wardrobe was dwindling down to a mere few outfits that fit. I had to buy a couple more maternity pieces (and it pains me how expensive maternity clothes are), but also found some non-maternity pieces at Value Village that I can use to layer.

How do I feel: Symptoms?
Pregnancy-wise I have been feeling good. My belly is definitely continuing to grow each week and my belly button is slowly disappearing. This morning I was woken up by a Braxton-hick contraction! It was such a crazy feeling and weird to feel how hard my belly was for that quick moment. Unfortunately my efforts to get rid of this cold haven't worked but I am starting to feel better.

Movement: Lots of strong movements that can definitely be felt from outside my belly these days. It still takes me by surprise sometimes when I feel a super hard kick!

Sleep: My sleep has been interrupted by my cold this past week, but baby has been on the same sleep schedule as me, so I haven't been woken up through the night from kicking etc. (yet).

What I am most looking forward to: Getting things set up in the nursery and nesting at home as we prepare for our little babe to arrive.

Outfit details:
V-neck sweater (non-maternity, but a size up): Smart set (thrifted) | Pants: H&M maternity

Fall Maternity Fashion: 24 weeks

Thursday, November 17, 2016

We are in the middle of Fall and I must say that I am enjoying being pregnant in a season where oversized sweaters and leggings are acceptable. Here's my weekly update for those who have been following my pregnancy journey.

How far along: 24 weeks
Size of baby: Eggplant

What am I wearing: Maternity clothes?
I've officially dug out all of my winter clothes to see what I can fit into before I make the move to buy any more maternity clothes. Things are getting tight, so I stick with maternity bottoms but have been trying to get away with non-maternity tops as long as possible. I've just been layering long tank tops under shorter shirts like this one to try and squeeze out a few more wears.

How do I feel: Symptoms?
Every day has been different depending on how much I try to do in a day. When I feel like I have the energy to get stuff done, I usually end up over doing it and just crash by 9pm.
I experienced my first debilitating muscle cramp this week, which was so painful. I woke up suddenly one morning when I felt my calf lock up and I had to force myself to stretch it out despite the pain. I've read that it's common but I have been trying to stay hydrated and rest to prevent it from happening again.

Cravings: I had my first strong craving this weekend for something sweet, and since I have been trying to keep healthy food at home, we didn't have anything. So my wonderful husband made a trip to the grocery store at 8pm and brought home a cupcake and ice cream (for him). Apparently the cashier made a comment about his choices and he said it was for his pregnant wife! lol We're both taking advantage of this "free pass" while we can.

Movement: Baby's kicks are getting stronger and it's been crazy to see my stomach moving when she gets going.

Sleep: I have had a few restless nights over the past week which hasn't been fun, but I know it's only going to get worse the bigger my belly gets. *Sigh

Best moment of the week: Getting some of our nursery furniture delivered! Now to put it all together.

Outfit details:
Open cardigan: Joe Fresh | Tee: Forever 21 | Jeans: Old Navy (maternity) | Boots: Dr. Martins

2nd trimester must-haves: 23 weeks pregnant

Thursday, November 10, 2016

If you're a first time mom like me, it's hard to know what you'll need during and after pregnancy. So, I wanted to share a few items that I have loved so far during my 2nd trimester.

2nd trimester must haves

1. Maternity pj's
I bought myself this set (which is on sale right now), from Thyme maternity and was going to save it for the hospital, but decided I might as well make use of it now!

2. Wireless bra
With my ever expanding breasts, this wireless bra from GAP has been a life saver! It's honestly the most comfortable bra I have ever owned and I even wear it to bed.

3. Sneakers
With lower back aches and tired legs being an every day occurrence, finding a comfortable and supportive shoe is important. And why not take advantage of all those trendy new styles!

4. Stretch mark cream
There are so many options out there for stretch mark prevention, ranging from inexpensive to ridiculously overpriced, but I have enjoyed using Earth Mama Body Butter. They have a range of organic products that I hope to use after pregnancy and for baby as well.

5. Cute notebook
I know we are in the age of technology, but I still enjoy writing down my weekly updates in my "baby journal". I started a new journal while we were trying to get pregnant and have continued through the weeks of pregnancy.

Here is my 23 week update if you're interested.

Size of baby: Grapefruit
Weight gain: 14.5 lbs

What am I wearing: Maternity clothes?
My outfits are getting less and less interesting, and I always end up wearing the same things. My husband has given me "permission" to go out and buy some new clothes, since every morning I end up going through so many outfits trying to find something to wear. Comfort is key!

How do I feel: Symptoms?
Have had very sore hips lately, and easily tired. I've been drinking a mid-day caffeinated tea this week (which I usually don't) just to get through the work day. I am also starting to notice my balance and centre of gravity is changing as my belly gets bigger.

Movement: Baby is always moving and I love those little reminders each time that we are going to have a baby!

Sleep: Have been getting as much sleep as possible lately to rest my tired body.

What I'm most looking forward to: Getting started on the nursery this weekend!

Outfit details:
Burgundy sweater: Joe Fresh (non-maternity) | Jeans: Rich & Skinny (non-maternity) | Ankle boots: Gap

Fall Maternity Fashion: 21 weeks

Thursday, October 27, 2016

I know this week's outfit is not very exciting, but it's a typical work outfit for me these days. I'm learning that dressing this belly is all about comfort and whatever fits!

How far along: 21 weeks
Size of baby: Baby bok choy
Weight gain: 12 lbs

What am I wearing: Maternity clothes? Maternity pants have become my friend. I had gone back and forth with still wearing my regular pants but once I put on my maternity pants, I don't know why I would go back. I am just wearing my regular tops but have noticed that my boobs are looking really big in them this week, since non-maternity shirts don't have nearly as much stretch to them (in the right places). Thankfully I can just throw on a chunky sweater and noone besides me can tell that my boobs have grown almost double the size!

How do I feel: Symptoms? I have been feeling really good lately as far as pregnancy symptoms go. Everytime something new happens I look at my app (I use Ovia Pregnancy), and it seems that I am right on track with where I should be.

Cravings: Last night I was craving chocolate, so my husband made me a delicious cup of hot chocolate. It was the perfect treat for a cold night, rather than indulging in halloween candy. Those mini chocolate bars are dangerous!

Movement: Now that I know what I am feeling is the baby moving, I can feel movement all day and night. I love it! The kicks have not been strong enough yet for my husband to feel yet, but hopefully in the next couple of weeks as our babe grows stronger.

Sleep: Sleeping "like a baby". Although I don't understand how that saying makes any sense, I have been sleeping really well. I am usually so exhausted by the end of the day that once I crawl into bed, I am asleep within minutes and have been able to sleep soundly through the night.

Best moment of the week: Sharing the gender with some of my family! I will be sharing some of those pictures next week.

What I'm most looking forward to: Sharing the news with the rest of the family this weekend! It is also my cousin's baby shower this weekend, and 4 of my cousins (including her) are all pregnant, so it will be fun to see everyone's growing bellies!

Fall maternity fashion: 20 weeks

Wednesday, October 19, 2016

I can't believe we are halfway to meeting our little babe! I have a timeline where I mark off each week, and I remember looking at the 20 week mark when I first got pregnant, thinking it was so far away. It has been somewhat of an emotional few days thinking about how far we've come and what we have to look forward to. I will be writing more about our story and the journey to getting pregnant soon.

How far along: 20 weeks
Size of baby: Length of a banana

What am I wearing: Maternity clothes?
Usually when I woke up in the morning, my belly was fairly small and wasn't very round. Then, I woke up one morning last week, and my belly had just popped! So, needless to say, my regular pants have gotten a little snug. I bought another pair of maternity pants and leggings, and have been wearing them for the most part lately, but I can still wear all of my regular shirts since I usually wear them a little bigger anyway.

How do I feel: Symptoms? If you ask my husband, he will say I'm moody (sorry babe). I guess I just have to get used to slowing down, because I feel like I have the energy and drive to do so much, but I get tired more easily and in turn, grumpy.

Cravings: No cravings, but man do I enjoy eating these days! Which may be funny to hear for those who know me well, because eating has always been more about feeding my body than really enjoying food.

Movement: I had been noticing more and more quick movements but they were far and few between. This week I had an early morning meeting at work, and I guess the baby wasn't ready to be up quite so early. I was sitting in the boardroom quietly and for about 30 minutes could feel baby moving around so much!

Sleep: Lately I have been waking up at 4:30am, I'll go to bathroom, and then can't get back to sleep. I usually just lay in bed rubbing my belly and thinking about what it will be like to have a baby to wake up to. I'm sure I'll regret saying this, but I'm actually looking forward to early morning feedings/ cuddles in bed while my husband sleeps beside me and probably the cat on the end of the bed.

Best moment of the week: Feeling the baby move!

What I'm most looking forward to: Taking some maternity pictures this weekend that we will use for our gender reveal!

Fall Maternity Fashion: 19 weeks

Thursday, October 13, 2016

It's been an exciting week! We had our mid-pregnancy ultrasound and got to see our growing baby together for the first time, since my husband couldn't be there the first 2 times I had one done. I keep looking at the photos we got back and I don't think it still has really set in that I am having a baby! It all seems so surreal.

How far along: 19 weeks
Size of baby: Mango, length of a zucchini (about 6"). Baby weighed in at 10 ounces at the 19 week ultrasound, and in the 56th percentile overall.
Weight gain: 9.2 lbs

What am I wearing: Maternity clothes? Still wearing my regular clothes, but am hoping to get at least another pair of maternity pants and leggings soon to up the comfort level. Things are starting to get tight! (I never thought I'd be excited about that.)

How do I feel: Symptoms? Feeling like myself again with very little symptoms these days. This second trimester has me in super-mom mode and wanting to cleaning every inch of my house before I get too tired again.

Cravings: No cravings, but I have really been enjoying Sprite lately. I had cut out all caffeine over the past 4-5 months, so it's been one of my small indulgances over the past couple of weeks.

Movement: Still unsure if it's for sure the baby that I have felt since it's such quick little reflexes. Should be more recognizable in the next couple of weeks.

Sleep: Still sleeping really well! Enjoying it while I can.

Best moment of the week: Getting to see our little nugget again at our 19 week ultrasound. And, most exciting of all, we found out the gender! We are going to do a little "reveal" so stay tuned for that. I'd love to hear your guesses!

Top: H&M | Jeans: Rich & Skinny (non-maternity) | Flats: Hibou from Little Burgundy
