#Finding my personal style

Friday, June 17, 2016

I have been reading a book called Women in Clothes, written by three women, Sheila Heti, Heidi Julavits, and Leanne Shapton, and it has been quite a captivating read!

Women in Clothes [Cover]

Reading through the accounts of 639 women has inspired me to find my own style, and not just follow what's trendy. Because to be completely honest, I am sick of seeing the same outfits on every style blogger, and every 20-something girl.

"It's all become so democratic. Anyone can look cool. Which is great. But it's harder and harder to find things that are really authentic or to create your own identity." [quote from Kim Gordon, Women in Clothes]

When creating an outfit or shopping for new pieces, I have been looking more at what works for me, and finding the right balance between comfort and style. I am letting go of the idea of trying to look "perfect", because there's something really beautiful in the imperfections. So, even though I want to look beautiful, I still want to feel like myself, and not feel like I have to hide my imperfections.

My best advice to you in finding your own personal style, is to experiment! It can be intimidating to step outside of your comfort zone, but just have fun. Fashion is clothing, but style is something personal. You get to tell your own story, and that's the best part of dressing for yourself, and no one else.

[Where to Stay] Palm Cove, Australia

Saturday, June 11, 2016

Pullman Palm Cove Sea Temple Resort & Spa

Finding accommodations in a city that you have never visited (and is on the other side of the world) can be tough. So when we were planning our trip to Palm Cove, I spent a lot of time searching various travel sites and corresponding with Australian travel agencies to find what would work best for our needs. Since we were traveling with 6 adults, we decided it was best to rent a house or condo that we could share. We were so pleasantly surprised when we arrived at the Pullman Palm Cove Sea Temple Resort, as it definitely makes a great first impression.

The way the condo was set up, worked really well for us and I would highly recommend it for anyone traveling with family or a group. There was a shared entrance, and to the left was an entirely separate Master suite, equipped with it's own bathroom, bedroom and both suites connected back on the balcony. To the right was the main living area, the 2nd and 3rd bedroom, bathroom, as well as laundry facilities.

The view from the balcony overlooked the main pool and out to the ocean.

We spent 4 week nights here, and we got a great price of $310 AUD / night, which was well worth it!
So, if you are looking to visit Cairns or surrounding area, I would recommend a visit (or stay) in Palm Cove. It was so peaceful and relaxing! And the poolside restaurant has a pulled pork sandwich that's to die for! Looking back on these memories has me itching to go back!!
'Til we meet again Palm Cove.

[What to Wear] Palm Cove, Australia

Thursday, June 9, 2016

I've been dreaming about our next vacation, and it has me reflecting on our trip to Australia in 2013. We hopped on one plane to next, discovering different cities and beautiful beaches.

One of my favourites was Palm Cove, Queensland - it was our own little private oasis. It is a small town between Cairns and Port Douglas, and I would highly suggest it to anyone planning a visit to the Great Barrier Reef!

One of the first questions I always have when going to a new destination is, "what should I wear"?
So, I'm here to give you some helpful tips on what to wear in Palm Cove.

  • CROP TOP
  • DENIM CUTOFFS
  • SLIDES
  • SUNNIES
  • STRAW FEDORA
  • CROSS-BODY BAG

The key is light-weight clothes that you can just throw on and still feel put together.

Thrifted heels and a Sunday church outfit

Tuesday, June 7, 2016

I have been enjoying thrifting a lot lately rather than shopping the regular retail shops, and came across this pair of Joe Fresh heels. I was excited to try them out this Sunday to church, but unfortunately they are a little too snug. So, I will be posting them in my Instagram shop, @thecanadiancloset this week, so keep an eye open if you're interested!

#Finding Peace

Saturday, June 4, 2016

As we all know, life does not always go according to plan. No matter the situation, the feelings of disappointment, sadness, anger, or frustration are all the same.

I have been going through this state of mixed emotions as we have been trying to have a baby.
There are so many ups and downs that it can be hard to stay hopeful after a while. I don't even really have the right words to express how I feel because it's more than a feeling, it is a desire, a yearning in my soul.
yearn·ing
ˈyərniNG'
noun: yearning; plural noun: yearnings
1.
a feeling of intense longing for something.

My nieces and nephews and I on my wedding day (2012)

Being a mom is one of those things that I always assumed would be part of my life, and I never questioned that it would happen. As a 29 year old woman, I am surrounded by ads, and facebook posts and every other social media outlet, and I am constantly reminded that everyone else is getting pregnant and having babies... except me.

Not getting pregnant month after month is extremely hard, and also very lonely. Speaking from personal experiences, I find that women are not afraid to talk openly about pregnancy and the pains of labour, but no one talks about what happens BEFORE the pregnancy. What about the emotional pain that a woman goes through after each failed pregnancy test? Or the various forms of fertility treatments that didn't work?

Yes, I may still have some anger to sort out, but I am also finding peace.
It's not something that will suddenly "click", it is something I am working on. I am handing over my anger to God, and asking for peace. I know that He has a plan, and I know in my heart that I will be a mother some day, it just may not happen the way I had planned, and I'm ok with that.
So, maybe I won't ever walk around with a 20 lb belly, but my husband and I will love a child so much that it won't matter how he/she came into our lives.
