Let's be honest

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

Many bloggers tend to share the fun and exciting events in their life through their blog. A family vacation, daily outfits, or a house tour. But what about the other half of your life? What about the messy bedroom you sleep in every night, the overgrown grass that you don't have time for, or the personal struggle that you are dealing with? It's easy to hide behind a seemingly perfect mask, but today, I want to share a piece of my real life with you.

You have seen the wedding photos, and the showers etc. with all of those big happy smiling faces...but what you don't know, is that I struggle with minor depression. It's something that very few people know about me. Not even some of my own family. Sometimes it's just easier that way. But I have felt like God put this struggle in my life for a reason, and I don't want to disregard that tug on my heart to share my story with you.
Over the past few years, there have been many events in my life that have shaped the person I am today. Moving away from home to go to University, having a terrible roommate which in turn made me hate school, moving back home and switching schools, missing my bf who was now long distance, and the list goes on. Growing up can be hard. As a teenager and young adult, there are so many decisions to be made and no time to discover who you really are or want to be. We let our parents, or friends, or even the media dictate so many things for us and we get lost in the middle of it all. Let me tell you, it can be confusing.

I had this nagging little feeling inside of me. I didn't know why. It would come and go so it was easy to ignore. It was easy to say, oh I am just tired from being a busy student, oh I am just sad because I miss my bf or my family, oh I am just having a bad day. It wasn't until recently, that I was watching a documentary on depression. Everything clicked. Everything made sense. It scared me to death to hear what these people were saying, because I could relate so well. It was also a sense of relief.

The scary and most frustrating part, is that depression will just sneak up on you. You can be anywhere, having a great time and it will just drop on top of you like a water bomb. You know that feeling when you are just shocked at first, and you stand there not sure what to do because you are dripping wet. You aren't sure whether to laugh or cry or just run away so it can't hit you again. It is hard to describe, because a lot of times, you don't even know how you are feeling or you are just void of any emotion at all. Some people cry a lot, some people sleep a lot, others overeat or don't eat at all. It's different for everyone, but the important thing for anyone who is struggling with depression, is to be surrounded by people who love you unconditionally. People who don't need answers, who can look at you and see you are suffering and stand by you through it all, who will just hold you tight without saying a word. I am blessed to have those people in my life and I know that I can make it through each day because I have them behind me and my God before me.

If you are struggling with anything, don't be afraid to tell someone. Let them be your support, and love you through it.

Not Wedding Wednesday: Ceremony Photos

This is one of my favourite pictures! Just to give you a little bit of background as to why my dad is picking up my father-in-law; We incorporated a small traditional Indian ceremony called Milni. Each member of the immediate family exchanges a garland with one another as a symbol of the two families joining together. Apparently there is always a little competition to see which father can lift each other higher, and my dad surprised us all when he went along with it and pick him up as well!

Travel Bag: Honeymoon in {St. Lucia}

Thursday, May 17, 2012

I thought I would share some photos from our honeymoon on the beautiful island of St. Lucia.

Here's also a few packing tips for a week at a sunny resort.
When packing footwear, it's easy to throw in a pair of shoes to match each outfit, but taking one pair of pumps, and one dressy sandal is the easiest way to save room in your luggage!

If you're travelling by plane, the temperature can change drastically from place to place.
We left at 6am the morning after our wedding, and the temperature was -1 (celsius) in Toronto, and when we arrived at the airport in St. Lucia, it was mid-day and blistering hot! I packed a pair of shorts in my carry-on so that I could change while waiting in the airport, and had a light blouse that could keep me warm on the plane, but still cool enough when we arrived at our destination.
Sunnies: Vintage | Shirt: H&M | Shorts: Thrifted | Sandals: Spring

Dress: Forever 21 | Sandals: The Shoe Company

No matter the occasion, black is the easiest color to work with and can go with just about anything. I bought this plain black tank as a last minute purchase for the honeymoon, and it ended up being my go-to piece. It was so comfortable to throw on with a casual pair of shorts, or in the evening after a long day in the sun.

Italian Dinner. Best lasagna I've ever had!
Tank: H&M | Skirt: Forever 21 | Pumps: Aldo

A Reflection

Monday, May 14, 2012

I have been married for 2 weeks already, and it's been amazing.
There are things we expect, and of course the unexpected, and some little surprises that have made me smile. I just wanted to share some reflections of these past 2 weeks with you, because I know it's only the beginning of more wonderful unexpected little surprises.

Of course with being a newlywed comes with many firsts, which we are slowly discovering...

On our first trip together as husband and wife, the honeymoon, I quickly learned that my hubby is the "protector of our travel documents". I was not allowed to hold onto my own passport since I tend to lose things at the most inopportune times. It was nice to know he has things under control and I didn't have to worry about anything.

One of our first days living together, I noticed husband was using the wrong towel. There are 3 different sizes for a reason! Right? I had to explain that the small square towel was for your face ONLY, medium size is a hand towel, and of course the bath towels. We both laughed about it in the end.

And one of the things that I have loved the most, is my husband's pure and genuine love. He makes me tea at the exact time I need it without even asking me, he plays with my hair as we fall asleep, prays for me each night, and this morning I found this sweet little love note on a paper napkin when I got in the car. I didn't think I could fall any deeper in love with him, but I guess I was wrong.
P.S. Don't tell husband I showed you this ;)
